Individuals commonly argue that chemical and biological weapons are simply issues of the past. The issues with chemical and biological weapons were more common historically. During World War I there was a large amount of chemical and biological weapon use (Goebel par. 1). This use of chemical and biological weapon has lead to laws prohibiting the use of these types of weapons. There is a great amount of fear surrounding biological and chemical weapons even though this type of attack is not common: “Chemical and biological terrorism attacks have been infrequent, and even though the weapons that are being used are extremely destructive, the number of casualties has been small.” (Finn par. 6). Although chemical and biological weapons have the capabilities to destroy populations, it is uncommon for there to be an attack that kills large numbers of people. One of the main countries littered with biological and chemical terror is North Korea. North Korea has been proven to test chemical weapons on their own citizens. While other countries may be developing chemical weapons, North Korea is the only country that is known to be testing chemical and biological weapons on their citizens (Chang par. 4). North Korea’s citizens are living in constant fear due to the experimentation of chemical weapons on the North Korean individuals. It is believed that up to 3,000 North Koreans have been killed due to chemical testing (Chang par. 7). This large number has raised serious concern from other countries. Currently, it appears that North Koreans are only performing experiments with these types of weapons on their own people, but there is no proof: “There has been no documented use of North Korea's chemical or biological agents on foreigners, but that does not mean there have been no victims” (Chang par. 7). North Korea has seemingly kept these brutal experiments isolated to native North Koreans, but North Korea is very secretive about all actions taken. There is now proof that there is chemical and biological testing in North Korea. One source even stated “An officer ordered me to select 50 healthy female prisoners. One of the guards handed me a basket full of soaked cabbage, told me not to eat it but to give it to the fifty women," said Sun Ok Lee, a former prisoner, in the middle of this decade. “All who ate the cabbage leaves started violently vomiting blood and screaming with pain. It was hell. In less than 20 minutes they were quite dead” (qtd. in Chang par. 8). Although this event is horrific, this is a documented instance in which North Koreans tested biological and chemical weapons on members of their own country. In North Korea, this testing usually only takes place on the prisoners, but it is not confirmed that there is no testing happening on everyday citizens. Not all contact with biological with chemical and biological weapons is fatal, but commonly those who are exposed to these types of weapons die (Terrorism 2000: How Chemical And Biological Weapons Are Changing The Face of Terror par. 5). Numerous Americans believe that the biological and chemical warfare issues are problems of the past. For Americans, in many cases, ignorance is bliss, but experiments with these agents are obviously occurring in North Korea.
